Meta: where do feature requests go?

@brad.king said that feature requests can be posted here for discussion, and/or as an issue on the tracker.

OTOH, @ben.boeckel said:

Can someone clarify?

Will my feature request get due consideration here? And/or should I post an issue?

Thanks.

For discussing an idea, here in the forum will get more eyeballs and a wider cross-section of users and contributors. It’s a good place to flesh out an idea and gauge how the community feels about it. Once you have a fairly clear picture of the feature you want to request and can describe it concisely, that’s a good time to open a new issue in the issue tracker with your proposal.

No one’s commented on my RFC / proposal / feature request yet. How long does it usually take for such posts to get some replies? Do they often get ignored? Is there anything I should be doing to give it more visibility, or make it more palatable?

Thanks.

Sometimes an idea just doesn’t get traction. There can be a whole range of reasons, some not related to the post at all (e.g. posting when most folks are on vacation). In general though, if no-one responds, that’s maybe a data point that perhaps others don’t find it to be addressing a pain point or providing feature of interest that matters to them. If you’re finding yourself on an island with a problem no-one else seems to have (or very few seem to have), that’s also potentially a data point that perhaps you might want to rethink your project structure or the scenario you’re wanting to achieve. For me personally, I find it is often worthwhile to ask “what’s the happy path that most folks are taking, and how can I make my project more like that”. This applies to using any major tool, not just CMake.

For the particular post of yours that you linked to, Brad has now responded.
