When I change CMAKE_TYPE in the Makefile so that the invokcation is:

MinGW CMake is different than Windows CMake and is still different from Cygwin CMake. I suspect you had a Cygwin CMake available in your MSYS environment (given the lack of Visual Studio generators in that list).
