On some older systems, where package managers don’t have openssl 3.x, I can easily build openssl 3.x myself. Is there a way in the bootstrap stage (or later) of building cmake to make it point to that self build location of openssl ?

I fully agree, with the removal. I have been pushing openssl 3.0x in many places in products where people were using 1.x. But looking at my options, for some old dev systems to see if there is still a way out and get those to cmake 4.3.0.
