Function of "CMake Nightly Date Stamp"?

Hi!
I have noticed that the Git archive of CMake has a regularly occurring commit by Kitware Robot, with comment “CMake Nightly Date Stamp”. I’m just curious what the function is, of these commits. Does it make the history look better in some way?

Those commits update the patch level of development versions, which is based on the date. See the CMAKE_VERSION variable documentation.
